BMM Receives Award for Coconut Processing Program

Baitulmaal Muamalat (BMM) won an award for their processing program that turns coconut into white copra and charcoal. The award came from the circular economy category in Indonesia’s Best Corporate Sustainability Initiatives (IBCSI) 2022. The Executive Director of BMM Nanang Basuki said that the award was aimed to empower this commodity in Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi.

“Coconut is a leading commodity in Central Sulawesi, especially Donggala. However, the abundant harvest has not been matched by processing that can provide added value. Therefore, we facilitate training on processing coconut into copra and charcoal. So that the selling value is higher,” explained Nanang in an official statement (23/1/2023).

According to economy.okezone.com, BMM, which is part of the National Amil Zakat Institution (Laznas) also provides technical training to the community. Starting from the production process to the marketing strategy for processed coconut products.

The coconut processing program is considered successful in increasing the community’s economic growth in a sustainable manner. This program succeeded in helping the community get back on their feet, after the earthquake that occurred in 2018.

“This award is at the same time proof of our role as Laznas. Which distributes the mandate from muzakkis and donors to zakat recipients and people who are entitled to receive it,” he added.
