The export value of coffee commodities in North Sumatra reached IDR 5.5 trillion in 2022. Head of the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine Center, Lenny Hartati Harahap, said that during this period, total exports were recorded at around 60,175 tons. In addition, shipments of coffee commodities from the port of Belawan occurred 2,547 times.
“Coffee is a commodity with the highest export frequency, especially in the last 5 years,” he said (24/2/2023).
According to sumatra.bisnis.com, Data from the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine Center noted that there were 80 companies exporting coffee commodities. These companies export coffee to 40 destination countries.
“In Sumatra, the largest coffee granaries are from South Sumatra. The second is Lampung, and the third is North Sumatra. This potential must be maximized because North Sumatra is a province that has excellent natural conditions for coffee, especially in the Sidikalang area. Sidikalang coffee is capable of competing in the international world,” explained Lenny.
More Attention to Coffee
Lenny said that to ensure the export process runs smoothly, there are things that need attention. From the farmer’s side, the cultivation of coffee plants is the main thing. From planting to delivery.
Meanwhile, from the exporting side, how the coffee is stored is of the utmost concern. Starting from the condition of the storage location, as well as the quality of the other accommodations.
“It’s not just planting and harvesting. But there are things that must be learned related to the techniques. So that the coffee can be well received abroad,” he added.
Head of the North Sumatra Economic Bureau Naslindo Sirait also gave his views. According to him, exports are one of the factors that can boost regional economic growth. The growth of an area can increase significantly with a sizable percentage due to exports.
“Exports have affected North Sumatra’s economic growth by 30 percent. Coffee is the 3rd leading product, after CPO and rubber,” said Naslindo.
