North Sumatra Cardamom Exports Reach IDR 18.5 Billion

Cardamom exports from North Sumatra have increased in the first semester of 2023. This increase has reached more than 100 percent. Some of the export destinations for cardamom are China and Thailand, which reached IDR 18.5 billion.

“Until June 2023, cardamom exports to China and Thailand have exceeded IDR 18.5 billion. An increase of 156.9 percent compared to 2022, which was IDR 7.2 billion,” said Head of Belawan Agricultural Quarantine Lenny Hartati Harahap (07/07/2023).

According to detik.com, the data was obtained from the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine IQ-Fast for January to June 2023 period. Overall, cardamom exports to China and Thailand reached 267 tons.

“Last Tuesday, the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine facilitated the export certification of 30 tons of cardamom to China.It will be transported by the Integra Ship. Before being exported, our officers have confirmed that the cardamom to be transported is safe. Free from pests and diseases,” he explained.

Lenny said that cardamom is often used for cooking spices and traditional medicine. Besides cardamom, his party also exported other spices to developed countries. Among them are cloves, cinnamon bark, cut tamarind, and hazelnut.
